Senryoku Taijutsu Training is not fighting. One of the most common mistakes people make when evaluating a training method is assuming every drill should immediately resemble a real encounter. In reality, skill development occurs in layers. In the video, Sensei Castile and his daughter Gracie (15, Sankyū) are performing a simple drill designed to improve the mechanics of yoko geri kekomi (side thrust kick). Sensei Castile holds a bō at a slight downward angle, terminating at chūdan (midsection level). Gracie places the sole of her kicking foot on the bō and allows it to glide upward along the line of the staff directly into the target. The purpose is not to simulate a fight. The purpose is to isolate a single mechanical element: the relationship between the supporting leg, hip, knee, and kicking foot as they rise, rotate, and extend into the target. By removing variables such as timing, distancing, footwork, deception, reaction, and resistance, the practitioner can devote full attention to developing one specific skill. Once that skill becomes controllable, additional layers are added. Then movement is added. Then timing. Then application. Training progresses from simple to complex. A mason does not build a wall by placing every brick at once. A musician does not perform a symphony before learning scales. Martial arts are no different. Mechanics first. Application later. Traditional Martial Arts Through Mechanics, Not Mimicry. 「形ではなく、力を観よ」Do not observe form—observe force.
